How can I effectively train my stubborn dog in a variety of different environments? I would reply first by asking what you mean by stubborn? Having a clear understanding of that is super important.
Some pet parents will call a dog that’s refusing to walk as stubborn, the same goes for pet parents with a dog who is pulling and doesn’t seem to want to listen either. In both cases, not only are we likely to mislabel a behaviour out of frustration, but also probably dismiss its meaning, by focusing only on the symptoms.
That’s why I always begin with “Why does a dog feel the need to exhibit the unwanted behaviour.”, aka, why is the dog acting in a so-called “stubborn” manner?
Think of it like an itch. If your skin itches, you scratch it and oftentimes it’s just that. But after a few more itches that don’t seem to stop, your next move will likely be to call your doctor so they’ll give you the Why and How to address it.
Without knowing the Why in your case, recommending a course of action will be tricky or perhaps not at all relevant. As a dog can have a hard time listening out of everything from frustration, fear, and discomfort to pent-up energy, understimulation and so on.
